First opening its doors in 1876, in a concerted effort to better meet the community’s needs following tragic coal mining accidents, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital is now northeastern Pennsylvania’s largest community hospital serving a seven county region.  With 412 beds, a medical staff of more than 400 physicians representing nearly 50 medical and surgical specialties, highly skilled nurses, and dedicated staff, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital remains consistently committed to providing high quality cost-effective care to the communities of northeastern Pennsylvania, ensuring optimal outcomes for each patient.  Wilkes-Barre General Hospital was accredited a Level II trauma center by Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation effective September 1, 2017.
